Every generation needs stories that remind us of one simple truth: “your beginning does not define your future”. Trisha Paravas, Founder and CEO of Roche Real Estate Development, is believed to be the only self-made woman real estate developer operating in Manhattan, New York, USA. But long before her business success, she was simply a young girl born in India with big dreams and the courage to pursue them.

As an adolescent, she moved to the United States of America alone with just $180 and an unwavering belief in herself. Even before relocating to America, Paravas had already discovered her entrepreneurial spirit. As a teenager, she started her first textile business in India and successfully sold it to a larger competitor.

In America, she earned a full academic scholarship and completed her MBA. She went on to spend more than a decade on Wall Street, working in senior leadership roles in one of the world's most demanding financial environments. The work was challenging, the expectations were relentless, and mistakes were never overlooked. Instead of giving up when things became difficult, she treated every obstacle as another opportunity to enhance her intellect. Her willingness to take risks would shape the rest of her career. Paravas – highlighted, she is bold and a risk taker; Paravas emphasized – “one can't grow in comfort”.

In 2013, although she had no background in fashion, she noticed something that others had overlooked. Fashion Week in New York were reserved almost exclusively for celebrities, media, and industry insiders. She believed fashion should be experienced by everyone. So, she founded Fashion Week Inc. (FWI) and introduced the idea of consumer fashion shows. It was a bold idea that challenged tradition and created an entirely new category in the American fashion industry.

Despite being a fashion industry outsider, Trisha Paravas created a niche category in the fashion shows arena by creating "consumer fashion shows" and releasing them directly to the public (before any social media app era), and created history by breaking the norm of the 60-year-old American fashion industry.

Most people would not dare such a move, going against an industry.

Trisha Paravas chose another impossible dream. She entered the world of real estate development—despite having no experience, no industry connections, and being told repeatedly that she was just an attractive woman. She faced rejection after rejection, but each "no" only strengthened her determination.

Today, she leads Roche Real Estate Development from Manhattan, creating projects that reflect her belief that beautiful design and quality homes should not be reserved only for the wealthy.

For Paravas, success has never been about proving others wrong. It has always been about proving to young people that impossible goals become possible when matched with relentless effort. Her story carries a message for every child, every student, and every young entrepreneur. You do not need the perfect beginning; what matters most is your willingness to keep learning, work harder than anyone expects, and never allow rejection to define your limits. Trisha Paravas is recognized as a formidable figure due to her tenacity and determination.

How was your childhood in India?

When people ask about my childhood, I always pause for a moment because it's not a story of comfort or certainty; the honest answer is that it was defined by extreme adversity. I grew up without parents. so, from a very young age, I had to learn how to stand on my own. The structure, consistency, and sense of safety that every child deserves simply weren't there. There was no umbrella to shield me from life's storms, and those early years were incredibly difficult.

I wouldn't wish that experience on anyone, but I also can't separate it from the person I've become. Adversity became my first teacher. It taught me resilience, discipline, and the quiet strength that comes from refusing to surrender to your circumstances.

Living through that kind of adversity changes you. It forces you to grow up faster than you should, to become resilient before you even understand what resilience means. While I would never romanticize those experiences, they shaped me in profound ways. They taught me self-reliance, perseverance, and the ability to keep moving forward even when the odds felt impossible.

Today, that same determination drives everything I do. I approach my work with intense focus, unwavering discipline, and a relentless drive.

What made you so focused and goal-oriented?

When I was about 14 years old, I watched a film based on the life of India’s athlete Ashwini Nachappa. I still remember the final race. There was something about the determination in that moment that stayed with me long after the credits rolled. As a child who had experienced a great deal of adversity, I saw more than an athlete crossing a finish line—I saw what was possible when you refused to let your circumstances define you.

That scene became a part of me. Even today, whenever life becomes difficult, or the noise around me grows louder, I return to it in my mindset. I imagine myself on the Olympic track. There are distractions, doubts, and obstacles, but none of them matter. My only job is to keep running, to stay focused to get to the finish line. That simple mental image has carried me through some of the toughest challenges in my career.

People often ask where my relentless drive comes from. The answer is surprisingly simple: I learned early that if you keep your eyes on the goal, the noise eventually fades away. Focus has become my greatest discipline. I have always been fiercely competitive—not because I want to defeat others, but because I believe in my competency and I like to challenge myself. Winning, to me, is never about luck. I make my own luck. It is about preparation, resilience, and showing up every single day with clearly defined goals and solid strategy. I am always razor-focused on my goals.

That is why children hold such a special place in my heart. Every child deserves someone who believes in them, to give them hope especially those who face difficult beginnings. As adults, we have a responsibility to open doors for the next generation and help children succeed and excel.

I hope Ashwini Nachappa reads this article and learns that she inspired me as a child, and I would love to collaborate with Ms. Nachappa, and I will gladly fund India’s aspiring athletes’ education and training to chase their dreams. And — I stand with all children who are dreaming now in India, and around the globe.

I hope my story inspires other children and gives them “HOPE”. By every measure, I stood no chance. All odds were stacked against me, yet, I always get to the finish line.
